The challenge

Manufacturing individualized medical devices from high-performance polymers is a time-consuming and very costly process. The use of milling, lathing, or laser sintering results in high material waste and products that are not cost-efficient – especially when PEEK or similar polymers are involved.

These issues slow down the product development process and lead to less customized devices for patients. Customized devices provide better medical care in the rapidly growing market for medical technologies.

The solution

Kumovis is developing a new 3D printer based on fused filament fabrication (FFF) for the manufacture of medical products. The printer enables economically feasible processing of high-performance, medical-grade plastics such as PEEK. In addition, Kumovis is ensuring that its filament fabrication process guarantees production that fulfills state-of-the-art medical standards (clean, biocompatible, particle-free). Its vision is to establish a certified and replicable process that enables individualized series production in the medical device industry, along with the following benefits:
