About Insect Research Systems
Insect Research Systems Ltd is developing technology for monitoring bed bugs in hotel rooms for the near-real time detection of their diagnostic chemical signatures. The company is building upon the know-how and experience of developing instrumentation for solar system exploration, such as ESA’s comet chasing Rosetta mission, and subsequent translational projects at The Open University addressing a range of challenges back here on Earth.

The challenge
Insect Research Systems Ltd is developing technology for monitoring bed bugs in hotel rooms for the near-real time detection of their diagnostic chemical signatures.
The company is building upon the know-how and experience of developing instrumentation for solar system exploration, such as ESA’s comet chasing Rosetta mission, and subsequent translational projects at The Open University addressing a range of challenges back here on Earth.
The solution
ESA BIC Harwell company, Insect Research Systems Ltd, is developing a novel detector that enables the global hospitality industry to reproducibly and accurately monitoring for the presence of bed bug infestations. Their near-real time monitoring system can be used to rapidly screen premises. When utilised as part of an appropriate management strategy it can form a due diligence defence in the case of a customer complaint. It may also be used to determine if a treatment has been successful in eradicating the problem.
