Global warming caused by pollution, growing energy needs and water scarcity is a major challenge. The Synext engine is the solution for this. It uses waste steam, released as by product from chimneys of industries, to generate electricity and hot water. Our engine is designed to convert low quality waste steam without the use of any toxic or environmentally harmful substances. Our mission is to help industries transition to a sustainable energy system by boosting energy efficiency.

The challenge

Global warming, pollution, growing energy needs, and water scarcity affect everyone and we need to take steps to reduce this impact.
• Stakeholders are pressuring companies to reduce visible pollution because a negative environmental image is not desirable.
• The Government forces industries to reduce emissions and energy consumption.
• There is a constant pressure on cost reduction within the company
• while shareholders only want their money spend on projects that are very profitable and efficient.

Recovering waste steam is a good step in the right direction. This steam is widely seen as the white clouds near ports and industrial areas such as the chemical (amine, sulphur) and steel industry. The problem with heat at lower temperatures (100-200°C) is that it is difficult to recover with current technologies because there is no cost-effective solution. The Synext engine uses innovative cooling techniques, to extract energy from this waste steam in a cost-effective way.

The solution

The Synext Engine utilizes atmospheric waste steam at low temperatures (100-200°C). It works on expansion to generate electricity through a generator. Within an hour, 1000 kg of steam can be converted into 50-60 KW power and hot water. The engine can produce up to 0.5 GWh/ year.
External sustainability goals are met by the improvement of the environmental image with cloud prevention. Waste steam will no longer be a visible polluter for stakeholders and the requirements of governmental regulations are met. Waste steam recovery leads to cost savings and tax benefits because reducing emission by the government is encouraged. It  operates without the use of any toxic or environmentally harmful substances and has a very low RoI(1,9 years).
To manufacture the engine, a partnership with Machinefabriek Geurtsen is established and TU Delft contributes with knowledge and facilities.
