ActInSpace® is an international innovation contest initiated by the French Space Agency (CNES) uniting over 60 cities across 5 continents. ActInSpace® is supported by ESA and the ESA Business Incubation Centres network. ESA BIC Sud France, led by Aerospace Valley, has been mandated by the CNES and ESA is in charge of the operational execution of ActInSpace® 3rd edition.
Designed for students but open to everyone, ActInSpace® is an event that aims to boost the student’s entrepreneurial initiatives and employ their creativity. The teams have 24 hours to imagine and design innovative services and products derived from space technologies and space acquired data. This initiative is designed to consolidate the space sector’s vibrant image and to show how space technologies are used for applications that reach into all areas of our daily lives.
The first edition of ActInSpace took place in 2014. Five French cities participated in the event. 201 candidates enrolled in ActInSpace I and 4 start-ups were eventually created. Each company has received or will receive a license to develop a CNES patent.
For the second edition, ActInSpace was organized with the support of the European Space Agency (ESA) enabling the event to reach an international audience. The event took place in 12 countries and 24 cities, on May 20-21 2016. Around 900 candidates teamed up to devise an innovative and realistic project to meet the space challenges set by CNES, ESA and other players in just 24 hours. ActInSpace also found a renowned international sponsor, Airbus Defence & Space (ADS), to match the scale of its ambitions. With its sponsorship, ADS has provided its challenges, experts, and offered two special prizes. The 1st international prize reflected the event’s new dimension. The winners of ActInSpace®—with the help of our further international sponsor Novespace— got the chance to experience the thrill of weightlessness onboard an astronaut training aircraft. Since the hackathon 14 startups have already been created and 40 teams decided to flesh out their project.
ActInSpace 2018 will be happening the 25&26 of May 2018. For the 3rd edition, 60 hosting cities are expected with at least 3000 candidates.
The organization is simple. CNES and ESA provide central support including advice for the organizations, various guides, marketing material and communication strategy, a dedicated website with a registration platform... CNES and ESA will provide challenges and organize the international finals including the 1st prize and accommodation for the winning team. Prestigious partners like Airbus will also provide new and exciting challenges for the candidates to tackle.
The local partners have to take charge of the local organization and the travel fees to Toulouse for the winning team. Of course, local sponsors can be found.
