Vaonis: The Stellina telescope under the stars

CES award-winning Stellina telescope from ESA Business Incubation Centre (ESA BIC) Sud France start-up Vaonis helps stargazers discover the universe and share the night sky with friends by a simple button press on an app.

Sharing the amazement of stargazing through a telescope used to be difficult since they were only designed for one eye at a time. Watching the sky’s beauty is wonderful but what good is it if you cannot show it to anyone else?

The French start-up Vaonis has created the award-winning Stellina, a telescope that turns astronomy into a truly social activity, and ready to conquer a broader, modern audience.

Typically, personal telescopes require time to set up and make fine adjustments. The new telescope from Vaolis alleviates the hassles of complicated setups. No thick user manual is needed as it automatically handles the fine adjustments with a mobile app. Just mount it on a tripod, open the app and it is ready in under five minutes.

Once connected to the app, simply choose what kind of stars, from a nearby nebula to entire galaxies or our closest neighbor, the moon, that you want to capture and Stellina will find and photograph them. The final images are then sent to the connected device for viewing and convenient sharing on social media with friends, loved ones and fellow astrophotographers.

The telescope weighs only 7kg and fits in a backpack, easy to take along on overnight camping trips as well as bringing onboard aircraft in a carry-on bag. The telescope has an 80mm aperture lens with a 400mm focal length and captures the sky at 3096x2080 pixel resolution, allowing for easy editing and sharing with either JPG or RAW formats. Powered by a battery pack it can run for up to 10 hours.

The Stellina telescope was awarded the CES 2018 Innovation Award in the Digital Imaging category, and can be pre-ordered online. The company is planning to launch the telescope in the North American markets by Q4 2018.
