Technology abstract

An Italian SME, located in Oricola (AQ), proposes a new generation of Event Data Recorder (Black Box) to be applied onboard different kind of vehicles (terrestrial and naval) in order to real-time monitor, record and trace all the operational events of the vehicle.
The technologies that compose the proposed Event Data Recorder flew in two different space missions, Eneide Mission and DaMa Mission, conducted with the Italian Space Agency.

This Italian SME is really active both in space and non-space sectors and they have the possibility to realise technological developments starting from the concept until the very final product. Very intensive internal research efforts were accomplished to develop this technology.

Technology Description

The Italian SME is developing innovative Event Data Recorder (Black Box) to be applied on-board terrestrial and naval vehicles in order to real-time monitor, record and trace all the operational events of the carrier. The technologies that compose the proposed system (Temperature, Pressure and Relative Humidity Sensors, Digital IMU (Inertial Measuring Unit) MEMS, Shock Sensors (X, Y, Z), Microcontrollers, Memories and Batteries) have been developed and tested in space. Therefore the TRL reached in space application is 9. These technologies, indeed, have successfully been developed and used in two different space missions inside two different experiments. The first experiment EST (Electronic Space Test) flew as part of the Eneide Mission of Gen. Roberto Vittori in 2005 and the second experiment APE (Astronaut Personal Eye) flew as part of the DaMa Mission of Gen. Roberto Vittori in 2011. Both experiments were entirely designed and manufactured by the Italian SME and have successfully flown in the two missions. EST Experiment was a technology demonstrator to validate an electronic high density power system, new generation batteries, advanced calculus devices for real-time computing, programmable and re-programmable devices and different kinds of sensors typically found on-board spacecraft. APE Experiment was a micro aircraft for space application, tested inside the ISS, for self-programmed maneuvers. The micro aircraft used gyroscopic micro-sensors in MEMS technology and micro engines with low-power management, based on micro-controller and last generation rechargeable battery elements. These technologies can be applied on Earth in different fields and diversified applications.</p>

Innovations & Advantages

The technologies selected for the innovative Event Data Recorder have been consolidated during the years and have been successfully tested for space application but also for earth applications.
Currently, the market does not offer products that can be comparable with the proposed Event Data Recorder. On the automotive mass market, indeed, only devices such as trackers or localizers are available, but a real “black box”, like those on-board trains or aircrafts, is not purchasable.
The new generation Event Data Recorder is developed in order to be installed on-board different kind of vehicles, like cars, motorcycles, buses and trucks but also on-board small size private carriers like pleasure boats or private small aircrafts. The successful use of the needed technologies in space sector, which is the most hostile environment to test technologies, gave evidence of the easy adaptability to the automotive environment. The requirements associated to this sector, indeed, are minor if compared to the spatial ones; however, automotive is a very harsh environment and commercial components often are not suitable for these applications. For these reasons the space-derived technology herein proposed constitutes a success solution

Current and Potential Domains of Application

The technologies tested in spatial missions have a clear application in a non-space environment. Indeed, they can be the base to design, manufacture and product a new generation of Event Data Recorder (Black Box) to be applied onboard different kind of vehicles (terrestrial and naval) in order to real-time monitor, record and trace all the operational events of the vehicle.
This device of the last generation includes most of the tested technologies, like: gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers, Relative Humidity, Pressure and Temperature sensors, on-board LAN, CAN bus controller, in order to acquire, in real-time, all the vehicle data by storing them into different memory banks, allowing a fine crash reconstruction, else that Health Usage Monitoring activities.
